About

Blog Topics

The blog will cover a wide range topics, primarily relevant to investing and business analysis.

That will largely mean:

  • case studies
  • explanations of investing terms
  • recaps and analysis of well-known fund managers
  • strategy related to value investing

In addition, we’ll also provide well-sourced, deep explorations into issues involving prominent businesses. For example, check out our recent story on Endo International which examines the 11-year life of their painkiller, Opana ER, and how it plays a role in the widely discussed opioid crisis.

Apollo

Arrow and Heel is the blog for Apollo, an investment analysis tool that helps navigate SEC filings to get to the key info more efficiently. To see what it’s all about, let’s check out Facebook’s 2016 Annual Report. Compare the SEC version with Apollo’s parsed version.

Aside from a cleaner presentation, it offers:

Feature Detail Example
Change detection You can dim/de-emphasize sentences that have appeared in previous filings, making it easier to keep up-to-date and spot new disclosures. In the “Legal Proceedings” section of Facebook’s last 10K and click the “Enable Change Detection” button (located in the top menu), you’ll quickly find their new lawsuit while the previously discussed information is de-emphasized.
Detection of significant events The site flags a range of significant events (acquisitions, debt offerings, etc.) and displays their relevant facts in the right sidebar In Twitter’s most recent 10K, agreements and acquisitions are flagged as events in the right sidebar.
Charts and CSV export (to import into Excel) Data is collected from a company’s filings across time for the main reports (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow). The info can be visualized as a chart showing a metric over time or exported to CSV to use in your models.
Note-taking and highlighting The site remembers your highlights and notes within the filing.
